International Day of Peace
Every year, the United Nations (UN) marks the International Day of Peace on 21 September. It was first declared 43 years ago as a shared date for the world to build a culture of peace.
In Darwin the United Nations Association of Australia NT (UNAANT) celebrated the day by acknowledging the legacy left by Japanese family, the Fujita's in the years following World War II.
We planned the event with the UNAANT, suggesting and organising to mark the day with the releasing of white bouganvillea flowers in the fouuntain situated in the peace garden at the Uniting Church in Smith Street. The Church holds much of the memorabilia of the Fujita family's time in the NT.
We also contacted and liaised with Ludmilla Primary School to include some of their students who took part in the commemorations, learning about the impact of the Fujita family on Darwin, making peace doves and planting them in the peace garden.
